Altarum is a nonprofit organisation, founded in 1946, that works to improve the health of individuals with fewer financial resources and disenfranchised populations. It partners with federal, state and local health agencies in the United States to turn health care policy into practice, combining independent research rigour with client-centred consulting. The organisation operates across four domains: transforming service delivery, advancing public health, integrating public health and health care delivery, and scaling health infrastructure.
Its technical work spans health IT solutions, applied research and evaluation, public health surveillance, health systems interoperability and health infrastructure scaling. Named programmes include lead poisoning surveillance, support for states during Medicaid unwinding, and the integration of peer recovery support services into criminal justice programmes. The health IT arm delivers solutions intended for the wider health ecosystem, with an emphasis on true interoperability and infrastructure that can operate at scale.
Altarum describes its approach as systems-based and hands-on, bridging policy and practice through pragmatic implementation work. Nearly eight decades of experience underpin its engagement with government health agencies, Medicaid programmes and public health bodies across the United States.
