The American College of Radiology (ACR) is a nonprofit membership organisation founded in 1923 and headquartered in Reston, Virginia. It represents more than 40,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists, and employs over 500 staff. Its work spans the practice and science of radiological care, from accreditation and clinical standards to research, education and advocacy.
For technologists, the most relevant part of the organisation is the Data Science Institute, which focuses on data science applied to radiology. It sits alongside technical work in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, medical physics, clinical quality and safety, and accreditation standards. The ACR Accreditation programme sets standards for radiology practice and facilities, and quality and safety activities form part of day-to-day operations.
Other programmes include clinical resources, publications, educational opportunities for members across radiological disciplines, research initiatives, and advocacy that serves as the voice of radiology in the United States. The organisation convenes communities of experts and describes its core values as integrity, visionary thinking, excellence, leadership and transparency.
