Grünenthal is an independent, family-owned pharmaceutical company founded in 1946 and headquartered in Aachen, Germany. Science-based and fully integrated, it covers the entire value chain from drug discovery and development through to manufacturing and commercialisation, with a focus on pain management and related diseases. The company employs approximately 4,100 people and reported revenue of €1.8 billion in 2025.
Its therapeutic work spans centrally acting analgesics, neuropathic, acute and chronic pain, migraine, urology and gastroenterology. Among its products are Tramal®, a central-acting analgesic launched in 1977 that became one of the most frequently prescribed in its class worldwide, and Palexia® retard (tapentadol), the first innovative molecule in the centrally acting analgesic class approved in more than 25 years. The wider portfolio of 13 brands across six therapeutic areas includes the acquired brands Nexium®, Vimovo® and Qutenza®. Grünenthal was the first company to register penicillin in post-war Germany.
Research and development is conducted at two sites, in Aachen and in Boston, United States; a further five manufacturing facilities operate in Europe and Latin America. The company has a commercial presence in 28 countries across Europe, Latin America and the US, and sells its products in around 100 countries. Growth has been pursued through acquisitions, including Andromaco in Latin America.
Grünenthal describes its purpose as "a World Free of Pain" and states a commitment to responsible business and positive societal impact; it has been recognised as an ESG industry leader. The company has been led by CEO Gabriel Baertschi since 2016.
