UTIMCO is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) investment management company established in March 1996 and headquartered in Austin, Texas. It manages endowment and other funds for The University of Texas System and The Texas A&M University System, the only such arrangement of its kind serving two university systems. It was the first external investment corporation formed by a public university system in the nation.
The company's mandate spans investment management, endowment management, portfolio management and long-term investment strategy. Assets under management exceed $80 billion, and the fund it oversees includes the largest public endowment fund in the nation. Funds under its stewardship include the Permanent University Fund, the Permanent Health Fund, the Long Term Fund and the Intermediate Term Fund.
UTIMCO's operating model was modelled on the investment management companies of Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Duke Universities, adopting their best practices in endowment management. Its stated mission is generating superior long-term investment returns to support teaching, research and patient healthcare, with an emphasis on scholarships and other educational programmes and on maintaining purchasing power over the long term. Its impact reaches beyond Texas through the healthcare delivery it supports.
