Variational AI, founded in 2019, applies machine learning and generative AI to small molecule drug discovery. The company provides a foundation model platform that generates novel, synthesizable compounds for pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners, in place of the trial-and-error search within existing compound libraries that characterises traditional discovery.
Its product, Enki, is a generative AI foundation model designed specifically for small molecule drug discovery. Unlike discriminative models that search existing libraries, Enki generates compounds de novo, exploring uncharted regions of chemical space while simultaneously optimising across more than 50 parameters. The stated result is the delivery of higher-quality lead candidates in weeks rather than the years conventionally required, against an industry benchmark of over a decade and billions of dollars to bring a single drug to market.
The company's technical work spans generative AI, foundation models, computational chemistry, de novo molecular generation, ADMET optimisation and pharmacokinetics modelling, with quantum computing in the background. It was founded by a team with AI research experience at Google, Microsoft, MIT, Caltech and D-Wave Quantum.
Variational AI works through partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Named partners include Merck, Rakovina Therapeutics and ImmVue Therapeutics.
