Wadhwani AI is an independent nonprofit institute, founded in 2018, that develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions for social impact. Its work is concentrated in India, addressing challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and education. The organisation builds AI tools intended for the bottom 95% of the population, collaborating directly with government agencies and frontline workers to implement its solutions at scale.
The team of over 200 AI researchers, data scientists, engineers, and domain experts has deployed 25 AI solutions across 9 government engagements, impacting an estimated 20 million people. Notable projects include Cough Against TB, which has screened over 122,000 patients for tuberculosis, and Oral Reading Fluency tools, which have completed 15 million assessments. The institute's work in agriculture involves a real-time chatbot support system for farmers, facilitating nearly 500,000 messages.
The institute's work is supported by philanthropies including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google.org, USAID, and UNICEF. Technical domains span healthcare AI, agricultural AI, educational AI, digital advisory systems, and chatbot support. Other deployed products include Shishu Maapan, a newborn health assessment tool, and digital systems for grievance redressal, which have resolved 3 million grievances.
