The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a scientific research institute in Baltimore, Maryland that operates space-based observatories and serves as the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Its technical work spans space telescope science operations, astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, data analysis tools, calibration pipelines, and observational support for the global scientific community. The institute is also preparing for the future Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope mission.
Engineering and research efforts at STScI centre on the software and data systems behind these observatories: calibration pipelines, data analysis tools, and the operational infrastructure that delivers processed observations to astronomers worldwide. Work is carried out across three space observatory missions - Hubble, James Webb, and Nancy Grace Roman, the last still in preparation - within domains including astronomy, space science, astrophysics, cosmology, and planetary science.
Beyond operations, STScI supports early-career researchers through the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program, the Lasker Data Science Prize Fellowship, and the Brinson Prize Fellowship. Its staff of scientists, engineers, and researchers work together in a collaborative environment, and its tools and support reach the global scientific community.
