Brown University Health is Rhode Island's first and most comprehensive not-for-profit academic health system, formed in 1994 when Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital partnered to create the network. The system integrates clinical care, medical research, and education through its affiliation with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and employs more than 20,000 staff across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
The network spans hospitals, primary care practices, urgent care facilities, and specialised services, making it the largest healthcare provider in southern New England. Its constituent institutions include Rhode Island Hospital, a teaching hospital and home to the state's only Level I Trauma Center; The Miriam Hospital; and Bradley Hospital, the nation's first pediatric psychiatric hospital. Brown Health Medical Group, the region's largest multi-specialty medical group, comprises over 870 physicians, while its primary care network serves approximately 125,000 patients at more than 20 locations.
Clinical programmes are organised through integrated centres and services covering cancer, cardiovascular care, neurosciences, orthopedics, and behavioral health, alongside trauma care, pediatric psychiatry, primary care, and multi-specialty medicine. The system's stated values are compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence, and its mission combines the delivery of medical care with research and medical education in a teaching hospital environment.
