Founded in 1824 and headquartered in Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health system, combining education, research and patient care. The institution employs more than 34,000 people and works across biomedical research, clinical trials, health professions education, academic medicine and patient care.
MUSC's biomedical research enterprise is the state's largest, drawing $349 million in research funding and supporting 1,497 active clinical trials; the university ranks in the top 20% of American health science institutions for NIH funding. Its educational arm spans six colleges - Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy - and trains more than 3,200 students a year.
On the clinical side, MUSC Health operates 18 hospitals across South Carolina and serves 46 counties, recording 3.21 million patient encounters annually. U.S. News & World Report has ranked it the number one hospital in South Carolina for 11 consecutive years.
